slaking rocklime. We heated 20kg of marble and limestone to approx. 1000C for about 4 hours to drive off 40% weight of carbon dioxide (calcination), creating about 12kg of rock lime. The rock lime was then carefully added to water so that slaking (hydration) could occur. When it cools, the slaked lime is aged under water to become lime putty, and then it will be added to sand to make lime mortar.
